The company plans to enter the national and global electric two-wheeler markets
- Etergo is an Amsterdam-based electric scooter startup with a single offering called the AppScooter.
- Ola Electric is already running projects to deploy electric vehicles and charging solutions across major cities.
- The AppScooter claims to cover 240km on a single charge.
Ola Electric (yes, it’s backed by the ride-sharing company that we all know) has acquired Amsterdam-based electric scooter startup Etergo BV. This is part of the company’s plans to enter the electric two-wheeler market, both within India as well as internationally.
The groundwork is all there because Etergo is on the brink of releasing its very first product since its establishment in 2014: the AppScooter. Despite a massive claimed range of 240km, the scooter can allegedly reach its 45kmph top speed in just 3.9 seconds thanks to its 6kW, 50Nm motor, making it quicker than the Aprilia SR 125. However, this figure is based on a simulation and hasn't been tested, so we'll reserve our judgement for now. While European regulations limit the Etergo's top speed over there, in India it can be derestricted to over 80kmph.
The three banana-shaped swappable battery packs (1.155kWh each) are extremely well packaged because in spite of the mammoth range figure, the AppScooter offers a humongous 50-litre underseat storage capacity. That’s almost 2.5 times what you get in an Access! She might look like she's slinging it effortlessly, but each of those battery packs weighs a significant 8.5kg.
We should point out that the 240km range is possible only at a constant cruising speed of 20kmph, so don’t expect such spectacular figures in the real world. The AppScooter is also a smart scooter with Bluetooth connectivity that can pair up to your phone to offer on-screen navigation, phone call management and music playback control via its 7-inch TFT display. Other features include remote locking/unlocking and a Find My Scooter function.
Ola Electric will combine Etergo’s seemingly excellent design and engineering capabilities with its own local manufacturing prowess to price its electric two-wheeler competitively once it is launched in 2021. Once here, it will take on the likes of the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube and Ather 450X. Besides the vehicle itself, the company aims to set up electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the nation, beginning with the major cities. It is already working with power distribution companies to set up battery swapping and charging stations in New Delhi. Full details are available below:
New Delhi, 27 May 2020: Ola Electric Mobility Pvt Ltd (Ola Electric) today announced the acquisition of Etergo BV, an innovative electric scooter OEM, based out of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
