While the three bikes share the same engine, one is a scrambler and the other two are neo-retro roadster bikes
Triumph launched its cheapest bike yet, in the 400cc segment. So ultimately which 400cc Triumph bike should you buy? Here’s the answer:
Triumph Speed T4 - Priced at Rs 2,17,000 (ex-showroom)
The Triumph Speed T4 is the newest 400cc bike added to Triumph’s catalogue. It is a neo-retro style roadster and is available in 3 attractive colours: Metallic White, Phantom Black and Cocktail Red Wine. The bike comes with an eye-catching “400” graphic on the sides of the fuel tank and a “Speed T4” name on the side panel.
Although the Speed T4 gets the same 398.15cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine as the Speed 400, this one makes 31PS at 7,000rpm and 36Nm at 5,000rpm, which is 9PS and 1.5Nm less than the Speed 400. To keep the costs low, the bike gets a conventional telescopic fork. It also has a 10mm reduction in rear wheel travel. It is fitted with 110-section front and 140-section rear bias-ply tyres from MRF.
In terms of features, it gets an analogue speedometer with an LCD screen displaying a tachometer, odometer, trip metre and other regular readouts. Other things you should note is its 806mm seat height (16mm more than the Speed 400). The wheelbase is 1406mm (29mm longer than the Speed 400) and a kerb weight of 180kg (4kg heavier than the Speed 400).
This is a good option for you if you’re looking for a 400cc bike with a retro silhouette that has modern features and performance that is not too intimidating. Exceptional build quality, fit and finish can be expected knowing about the Speed 400. Overall, the bike’s price tag makes it a more attractive package.
Triumph Speed 400 - Priced at Rs 2,40,000 (ex-showroom)
The Triumph Speed 400 is a retro-roadster style bike from the British manufacturer. It recently got an update for 2025. It has 4 stunning colour options: Racing Yellow/Pearl Metallic White, Phantom Black/Pewter Grey, Pearl Metallic White/Pewter Grey and Racing Red/Pearl Metallic White.
The bike is powered by a 398.15cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that produces 40PS at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm at 6,500rpm and is paired with a 6-speed transmission with a slip-and-assist clutch. The motor offers quite a sporty ride. The bike is equipped with an upside-down fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear. The bike is quick on its feet while making its way through traffic and feels stable out on the highway. For 2025, it gets a fatter Vredestein set of tyres, 110/80 R17 at the front and 150/70 R17 at the rear. It also has adjustable brake and clutch levers as an addition.
In terms of features, it is quite basic. It is fitted with all-LED lighting, bar-end mirrors, switchable traction control, and Bosch dual-channel ABS. It has a semi-digital instrument cluster although it lacks smartphone connectivity or navigation but displays other information like gear position indicator, distance-to-empty readout, and tell-tale lights. It also comes with a USB-C charging port.
This is a very good choice to look at if you want something engaging to ride at a relatively affordable price tag. It has a smooth and lively engine that will enable you to make quick overtakes in the city and have an enjoyable highway ride.
Triumph Scrambler 400 X - Priced at Rs 2,64,496 (ex-showroom)
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X is the cheapest scrambler from the Triumph line-up. It gets a rugged look, the kind where that bike would look more attractive after being ridden off-road. Engine-wise, it gets the same configuration as the Speed 400. Being a scrambler it is equipped with a 43mm inverted fork offering 150mm wheel travel, and a preload-adjustable gas-charged monoshock with a remote reservoir which has 150mm of wheel travel.
It rolls on a 19-inch front and a smaller 17-inch aluminium alloy wheel at the rear, both wrapped in block-pattern tyres. It gets the same 13-litre fuel tank as the Speed 400, while its seat height is taller at 835mm. The bigger components add to the weight, making it 9kg more than the Speed 400. Adding that, it has a kerb weight of 179kg.
The Scrambler 400 X is an excellent tool for commuting on our bumpy and pothole-filled roads while being comfortable out on the highway and good for light offroad riding. If you are worried about the extra seat height and weight then this one might intimidate you.
