A closer look at Triumph’s flagship naked’s finer details
Triumph dropped a bomb with the new Speed Triple 1200 RS. From a new motor to sharper styling, there’s a lot more going with Triumph’s flagship naked. While you could get all the information in this story, here are some droolworthy details of the new Triple 1200 RS:
Design:
The new Speed Triple 1200 RS adopts the new design language we have seen on Triumph’s current-gen Street Triple series. The bodywork is much sharper now, but in spite of that, Triumph has managed to retain the muscular look the Speed Triple has always been associated with. However, the new model drops the underseat exhaust units in favour of a traditional side slung unit. Though the exhaust is proportioned handsomely, it somewhat steals the limelight from the new V-spoked rims sitting on the single-sided swingarm.
Engine:
The old 1050cc triple motor has made way for a 1160cc in-line three-cylinder powerhouse that belts out 180PS at 10,750rpm and 125Nm at 9,000rpm, which is a bump of 30PS and 8Nm over the older model. Interestingly, the new motor is a whole 7kg lighter.
Electronic Package:
The Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS has been equipped with a sophisticated IMU-controlled electronic package. The Speed Triple features five riding modes, cornering ABS with two modes, four levels of traction control and wheelie control as standard.
Chassis:
Triumph has developed a completely new chassis for the Speed Triple 1200 RS. The cast aluminum chassis is not only 17 percent lighter but according to the brand, makes the RS much more agile and precise. With the new chassis, Triumph has been able to move the weight further forward and lower down.

Console:
The 2021 Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS comes equipped with a new 5-inch TFT display. The console features a new user interface, which the company claims will be easy to understand. It also comes with Triumph Connectivity System as standard. This allows riders to explore options like navigation, phone and music control, and even their GoPro on-the-go.
Switchgear:
The functions on the console can be toggled via the backlit switchgear. This is a first-in-segment feature, and the amber backlight does go well with the bike’s mean look.
Keyless ignition:
For the first time, the House of Hinckley has equipped a motorcycle with a keyless system. From ignition and steering lock to even opening the fuel filler cap, everything can be done with the key fob. And yeah, there’s also a provision to disable the keyless system for additional security.
Quickshifter:
The new Speed Triple comes equipped with a bi-directional quickshifter as a standard fitment. It allows riders to shift up as well as down the 6-speed gearbox without using the clutch.
Headlight:
Triumph couldn’t let go of the iconic bug eyes, and how could they? After all, this element turned out to be the Triple family’s identity. For 2021, the twin headlight setup is a lot sharper and swooping down, rendering it a menacing look. Complimenting it are the LED DRL brows.
Tail Light:
Along with the overhauled front, the tail section too has been given a nip-and-tuck. The new tail light gets a unique LED bar, which makes the whole unit eerily similar to Tesla’s logo.
Brake:
Dropping the anchor on Triumph’s flagship naked are Brembo Stylema radial monobloc calipers clamped on to twin 320mm disc brakes at the front. A 220mm disc paired with Brembo’s two-pot caliper does the job at the rear.
Suspension:
The Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS comes equipped with fully adjustable Ohlins 43mm NIX USD fork and TTX36 monoshock. Both ends offer a suspension travel of 120mm.
Tyres:
With so much power on tap, the Speed Triple now comes super-grippy Metzeler Racetec RR K3 tyres-- a 120/70 unit at the front and a 190/55 unit at the rear.
Accessories:
Triumph is offering an array of accessories with the 2021 Speed Triple 1200 RS. From two options for the flyscreen to machined parts like brake reservoirs and bar-end mirrors and even tyre-pressure monitor and heated grips, there are many personalisation options. For those looking to the take the RS to the track, Triumph also provides an option to fit Pirelli Supercorsa SC2 tyres.
The Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS goes up against the likes of the Aprilia Tuono V4, Kawasaki Z H2, Streetfighter V4 and the BMW S 1000 R. If you were to pick one, which would be your weapon of choice?
