The 850 Sport appears to be based on the Tiger 900

  • It could be a road-focused bike.
  • Powered by an 888cc in-line triple motor that makes 94PS.
  • Triumph may also introduce an entry-level sport tourer and an ADV based on its 660cc engine.

A design application has been filed for the Triumph Tiger 850 Sport at the Environmental Protection Agency in the US, which means Triumph is looking to re-enter the sport-touring segment. However, this one may pack a smaller 888cc engine rather than the previous 1050cc from the Speed Triple.

The documents suggest the road-biased ADV is powered by an 888cc motor that puts out 94PS at 8750rpm and 87Nm at 7250rpm. The power and torque figures put it within spitting distance of the Tiger 900 which suggests they could share the same engine. But, rather than christening the bike the ‘Tiger Sport 900’, Triumph has opted to call it the ‘Tiger 850 Sport’. This suggests the bike could be an affordable option positioned below the Tiger 900 GT.

The previous Tiger Sport models were purely meant for the road, and from the looks of it, so is the 850 Sport. It could come with longer travel suspension, road-biased tyres, a taller windscreen, and an upright riding posture with comfortable seats.

We believe Triumph may introduce the Tiger 850 Sport in India sometime later next year. It would compete with road-focussed tourers such as the BMW F 750 GS and Ducati Multistrada 950

But, that’s not all she wrote. Triumph’s presentation for the upcoming Trident also revealed details of a new breed of affordable motorcycles from the manufacturer. This includes an entry-level Tiger Sport powered by the same 660cc triple seen on the Trident. It even gets the same frame with long-travel suspension and axially mounted calipers which may help Triumph cut costs.

Same goes for the new entry-level Tiger on the extreme left which seems to share the same 660cc engine with minor design tweaks. The lineup could be Triumph’s new entry-level range which should help target a wider audience.
