Updated River Indie Launched In India

Gets one feature that it badly needed before

River, a Bengaluru-based startup, has launched their updated version of the Indie electric scooter in India. The scooter remains the same as before in terms of design, battery and motor specs and features except for a very important one. 

What’s new?

The River Indie now comes in two new colours: Storm Grey and Winter White, which brings the total available colours as five: Yellow, Blue, Red, Grey and White. The Indie now gets a chain drive, instead of a belt drive.  This makes it the first electric scooter to be available with a chain drive. On the features front, the River Indie now gets a dedicated reverse button which allows the rider to get into reverse easily. 

What’s unchanged?

The River Indie remains the same in terms of design. The square dual-LED lights and panels, long seat and the boxy design remains the same. The scooter continues to get a 4kWh li-ion battery pack which is paired to a mid-mounted motor producing 6.7kW and 26Nm. River claims the Indie has a claimed top-speed of 90kmph and will do the 0-40kmph sprint in 3.9 seconds. The scooter has a claimed IDC range of 161km and will take 5 hours to charge from 0-80 percent using a standard wall charger. 

In terms of features, the Indie gets a 6-inch LCD instrument cluster with automatic brightness control, a massive  43 litres underseat storage which gets LED light along with a 12 litre glovebox which can be locked and a USB charging port. River also provides an additional USB port on the handlebar as well. Other notable features include a pair of rider footpegs, crash bars integrated into the apron, saddle stays, raised clip-on handlebars, hazard lights, and a side-stand motor cut-off function. The River Indie gets a telescopic fork and dual-shock absorbers, dual disc brakes and 14-inch alloy wheels at both ends. 

Price and Rivals

The updated River Indie is now a tad bit more expensive, priced at Rs 1,42,999 (ex-showroom, Bengaluru) which is Rs 5,000 more expensive than before. Though the scooter is only available in a select few cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Coimbatore. The Indie goes against the likes of Ola S1 Pro, Ather Rizta, Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube and Vida V1.
