And accompanying it could even be a bobber based on the new 400cc platform
With the new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, Triumph debuted its new 400cc liquid-cooled platform with a bang. And during its presentation, the British marque reminded the viewers repeatedly of its heritage bikes like the original roadster, scrambler and cafe racer: the 1937 Speed Twin, the world’s first production scrambler, the 1963 Bonneville T120TT, and the OG 1960s cafe racer, the Bonneville T120.
The same lineup has been brought in a modern, big-bike avatar with the Speed Twin 900/ 1200, Scrambler 900/1200, and the Thruxton RS. So now that the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400 X have been introduced, it’s only logical that the next motorcycle could be the Thruxton, in a 400cc avatar. It isn’t surprising considering the 400cc platform is flexible enough to accommodate a cafe racer without making substantial changes.
While the Thruxton 1200 was hands down one of the best-looking cafe racers out there, bringing out a 400cc avatar will still be more of a niche offering that cafe racing enthusiasts will love. Since the Bonneville lineup also gave birth to the Triumph Bonneville Bobber, the posssibility of bringing out a 400cc bobber cannot be ruled out.
So should the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and the Jawa 42 Bobber beware? Well, even if Triumph has something like it in the pipeline, its launch will still be quite some time away. And we think the Bobber 400, if it comes, will be even later than the Thruxton 400. So till then, we’ll ‘make do’ with the marvelously-priced Speed 400 and the to-be-launched Scrambler 400 X.
