At the risk of repeating ourselves, we’d like to mention that the Ather 450 left us thoroughly during our tests. But it is set to be phased out and replaced with the more sophisticated 450 Plus and 450X. But that hasn’t stop Ather from improving the scooter that put the company on the map. It has now rolled out the seventh OTA update for the Ather 450 which includes improvements based on feedback taken from customers. There are a couple of aspects that have been improved, chief among which is the dashboard’s ability to switch to dark mode after sundown to improve legibility.
It works just like the dark mode feature on smartphone apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. Essentially, the screen turns dark at night, which puts less strain on your eyes. But unlike the console on the KTM 390 Duke which switches its screen colour after sensing light conditions, the one on the Ather 450 is based on the time of day. In other words, it switches to the ‘Dark Theme’ screen at 6pm and disables itself at 6am. Ather has even given users the option to manually choose between the two modes to suit the lighting condition.
But that isn’t the end of it. The latest update also allows the ECU to save the previous ride mode settings, which wasn’t possible before. Simply put, if you end your ride in Sport mode, the scooter will remain in the same mode for the next ride. The earlier code would reset the Ather 450 into Ride mode, forcing you to manually switch to Eco or Sport when you start up the scooter. The update also improves the on-screen keyboard sensitivity.
We’ve already ridden the Ather 450, which in our eyes is the current benchmark in the electric scooter segment. You can read more about it here. However, the Ather 450X seems to be better than its predecessor in every single way. We spent some saddle time on the scooter and here’s what we think of it.
