What more does an Indian bike enthusiast want? Or shall we rather think what does an Indian bike enthusiast miss? One small chat with people, and straight away get to know of sports bike! There clearly is a dearth of sports bike that most of us have grown up looking and drooling at the posters of. Though there have been many recent news of sports bike that clearly say that there are many international two wheeler manufacturer who have plans to launch the products in near future. However, on the local front, Bajaj Auto has now shown interest in manufacturing sports commuter bikes. Two days back, on Tuesday, Bajaj Auto publicly showed its interest in growth in sports commuter segment. While launching Bajaj Discover 125 ST in Gujarat, the company stated that it earns around 17 per cent of its sales from this particular segment of sports commuter segment.
In the last financial year, the company saw a total of 56,000 sold units, which it double up in the next year. Though, the company has recently come up with a new Bajaj Boxer BM100, which is a 100 cc bike, Bajaj President, K. Srinivas, on the event of the launch of the flagship model of its latest sports tourer, has said that the company wants its consumer base to stop using 100 cc bikes and shift to 125 cc ones. Also, he mentioned the company’s hopes to gain a 50 per cent market share in 125 cc segment bikes instead of the current 40 per cent. Vima Sumbly, the GM of Sales with Bajaj Auto, gave the growth statistics at the same event. As per the stats, commuter bikes segment grew a by total of 11 per cent in the gone-by financial year.
While the sports commuter bike won a huge 36 per cent of growth. Also he noted that the 100 cc bikes of commuter segment might see a dip soon as the upcoming buyers are more and more venturing into sports commuter segment. To be noted is the fact that Discover has leaps and bounds in the last fiscal year, a total of 186 per cent, in the Gujarat bike market. With as many bikes that were sold in India in the first quarter of this year, commuter segment saw a total of 66 per cent bikes being sold, and 17 per cent each were fetched by sports and sports commuter bikes. If we look back, the same stats differed hugely, with commuter segment selling a total of 73 per cent, sports bikes 14 per cent and 13 per cent of sports commuter.
Not to be forgotten is that this particular segment that we talk of here, the sports commuter segment, was initiated by Bajaj Auto in the year 2004. This start came with the launch of Discover.
