Two electric scooters that are setting standards in the EV segment. But how different are they?
The Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450X have been creating waves in the two-wheeler EV space by setting new standards. This not only comes in the form of performance, but overall build quality and features that are second to none. That said, how different are the two when placed next to each other? Here’s a closer look in detailed images...
The two scooters have very distinct personalities, the Chetak with its elegant design evokes nostalgia and inclines more towards the neo-retro side of things, while the 450X with its angular yet simplistic styling associates itself better with the millennials of today.

Both e-scooters come equipped with a full LED headlight. The Chetak though also features a halo LED DRL.
Same goes for the tail light. While the Chetak uses a split LED unit with sequential blinkers, the Ather 450X features a single LED strip with integrated turn signals.

Both come equipped with a full-digital instrument console, however, the one on the Chetak is a circular negative LCD display surrounded by a silver bezel. As for the 450X, it offers a full-colour display with a host of features that eclipse that of the Chetak. You can read more about the Ather 450X' instrument console here.
The fit-and-finish of the Chetak is top-notch and a notch above of the 450X, and this shows in the switchgear. Besides, you have plenty of options to play with when it comes to the Chetak. Essentially, the right-hand-side switchgear (feather touch) enables you to select drive modes, open the underseat storage, switch to reverse mode and more! The switchgear on the Ather 450X may seem conventional, but it lets you breeze through a number of options on its instrument console and accept or reject calls. Another trick up the 450's sleeve is its touchscreen display.
The Ather 450X takes the cake in terms of underseat storage. Its massive 26-litre boot space can easily accommodate a half-faced helmet and still have storage for your knick-knacks. The Chetak's boot is quite shallow, allowing you to house only a half-face helmet, while the apron storage compartment is packed with its charging cable and first-aid kit/toolkit.
In terms of suspension setup, the Chetak uses an unconventional trailing-link front suspension and a single-sided rear swingarm monoshock. On the contrary, the 450X employs a telescopic fork and a monoshock.
Braking duties are handled by a disc/drum brake up front and a drum unit at the rear when it comes to the Chetak, and disc brakes at either end when it comes to the Ather 450X. Both scooters get CBS (combined braking system) as standard.
A lithium-ion battery pack with different specs powers both the scooters. Take the Chetak, for example, it delivers a claimed range of 85km in Sport mode and 95km in Eco, while the 450X returns a true range of 85km in Eco. Top speed, on the other hand, is capped at 60kmph and 80kmph for the Chetak and 450X respectively.
It all boils down the cost. The Bajaj Chetak retails at Rs 1 lakh and Rs 1.07 lakh for the Urbane and Premium version respectively (ex-showroom, Bengaluru & Pune). You can get the 450X for Rs 99,000 in Bengaluru and Rs 85,000 in Delhi (both prices ex-showroom) via its monthly subscription plan. However, this price spikes to Rs 1.49 lakh and Rs 1.59 lakh (Plus and Pro plan respectively) if you were to buy the scooter upfront.
