Here is what we think are the top five second-hand scooters in the market and what makes them such great buys in the used market

With the increased amount of traffic on roads, riding a two-wheeler has become a necessity, primarily for short distances. And what’s better and more convenient than a scooter to zoom through traffic on chaotic Indian roads.

At the same time though, a shortage of resources, increasing manufacturing costs and more, has led to a steep increase in the prices of two-wheelers, and scooters are no exception. But, there is a way out as one can turn to the second-hand automobile market. Here’s a list of what we believe are the best second-hand scooters available in India.

Honda Activa 4G, 5G, 6G

Honda India launched the Activa scooter exactly 23 years ago in May 1999. The Activa didn’t just give the masses a reliable scooter, but completely changed the idea of a comfortable and convenient daily commuter.

The scooter has a simple and classy design, is light and agile, and has been updated over the years for an optimum riding experience. Apart from the engine, the scooter itself is considered to be extremely reliable and promises years of dependable service. Being mostly made of metal panels, you can be assured that fixing minor dents and scratches is a fairly easy affair.

You can easily get the Activa 4G, 5G or 6G (different year) models in good condition (less kilometres) for upwards of Rs 40,000 in the second-hand market. Moreover, you can easily source the original parts for the scooter, meaning, getting it serviced is never going to be an issue. Depending on your riding, the scooter is capable of doing more than 50kmpl.

TVS Jupiter

Launched almost 10 years ago in 2013, the Jupiter was TVS’ answer to Honda Activa in the 110cc scooter segment. The Jupiter looks stylish thanks to all the attractive colours it’s offered in and it has a powerful fuel-efficient motor which makes it a perfect commuter for daily use.

Buying it second-hand is still reasonable (and in some cases, preferable) as it will cost you upwards of Rs 35,000 for one in great working condition. There won’t be any worries in getting it serviced or finding spare parts either, as this scooter is still sold by the company. Interestingly, TVS recently launched a more powerful 125cc version of the Jupiter which comes packed with a bunch of new features.

Honda Dio

India’s OG sporty scooter, the Honda Dio, uses the same reliable 109cc powertrain as the Activa, but packs a little more pizazz. Even though it shares the same underpinnings, it mainly differs from the Activa in its funky, youthful bodywork which ditches metal panels for plastic ones.

Similar to its sibling, the Dio, is reliable but what’s more interesting with this one is that even after so many years, it is still a head-turner. The wide availability of service centres and readily available original parts makes it a solid buy, even second-hand. A 2019 model, ridden less than 13,000km, can be had for Rs 45,000, making it a good value for money.

Suzuki Access 125

The Suzuki Access 125 is the most powerful scooter of this lot, thanks to its 124cc engine. In its recent avatar, it gets more retro styling when compared with its rivals, which really makes it stand out in the crowd.

With a fuel economy of over 50kmpl, the Access 125 is a practical, powerful and stylish scooter offering, which also flaunts interesting features. If you are looking for a good deal, you can find a 2017 model for as low as Rs 32,000, in great condition, which is definitely a steal considering all that the scooter has to offer.

TVS Scooty Pep Plus

The TVS Scooty Pep Plus is super light, agile, easy to manage, and confidence-inspiring, making it a perfect candidate for beginners. This also makes it the best second-hand scooter you can buy, if you’re just starting your journey with two-wheelers and will go a long way in helping polish your riding skills.

Due to its compact size, the Scooty Pep Plus is not just fun to ride, but very useful in tight traffic and narrow streets. A recent model in great condition can be bought for between Rs 25,000 and Rs 30,000. The scooter is powered by an 87.8cc engine and gives a whopping 68kmpl of claimed fuel economy, which will definitely reduce your fuel bills by a significant margin.

All of the above-mentioned scooters are still sold by the companies and are updated with modern tech and features as time passes. That said, one can rest easy with regard to getting these scooters serviced as their parts are still easily available.
