A closer look at the Bavarian electric marvel
This week, BMW introduced the world to its latest creation, the BMW CE 04. The electric scooter has left people awestruck with its stunning design, and also with the GBP 11,700 (roughly Rs 12.08 lakh) price tag. But what’s so special about this e-scooter? Let’s find out:
Design
Unlike most of the products to roll out of BMW’s factory, the CE 04’s design can only be described as ‘disruptive’. It is freakishly long, sports just enough body panels to complement its streamlined appearance and gets a flat, bench-like seat. Hence, BMW hasn’t strayed from the original concept of the e-scooter and in the production guise too, it looks straight out of a sci-fi movie.
Headlight
Apart from the usual LED headlight setup, BMW also offers an adaptive headlight feature as an optional extra. This tech automatically adjusts illumination depending on road conditions.
Console
The massive 10.25-inch TFT console comes standard with navigation and mobile connectivity. This console is unlike any we have seen on a scooter, and seems to be adapted from the new BMW R 1250 RT.
Electronics
Unlike most e-scooters, the BMW CE 04 is loaded to the tee. It comes with ABS and ASC (automatic stability control) as standard, and Dynamic Traction Control, a Dynamic riding mode and ABS Pro (cornering ABS) as optional extras. Riding modes include Eco, Rain and Road.
Motor
The BMW CE 04 features a unique liquid-cooled electric motor available in two variants: 11kW and 15kW, with a peak power of 23kW and 31kW respectively. That said, both the motors max out at 120kmph.
Battery
Complementing this motor is an 8.9kWh battery pack with a claimed range of 130km for the high-output motor which is lowered to 110km on the low-output motor. This may not seem much, however, the Beemer makes up for it with its charging time. While the standard wall socket can charge the e-scooter in 4 hours and 20 minutes, the optional quick charger drops it down to just 1 hours 20 minutes. In fact, BMW claims it only takes 45 minutes for the battery to charge from 20 to 80 percent.
Brakes
The BMW CE 04 comes equipped with disc brakes at both ends, aided by dual-channel ABS as standard.
Suspension
BMW Motorrad has opted for a simple 35mm telescopic fork and monoshock attached to the single-sided swingarm.
The BMW CE 04 seems to be the next step for the brand in terms of future mobility. As with all new innovations, its price does seem quite exorbitant. However with many brands vowing to make a 100 percent transition to electric vehicles, it is only a matter of time that this tech filters down to more affordable road-going offerings.
