The Speed 400 will spice up the sub-500cc neo-retro segment
Countless spy shots and multiple teasers later, the Triumph Speed 400 has finally been launched in India. Triumph has priced the Speed 400 at an insanely mouth-watering Rs 2.33 lakh. In fact, if you're among the first 10,000 folks to take it, you can get it for an even lower Rs 2.23 lakh (both ex-showroom Delhi). The Scrambler 400 X, meanwhile, will be launched later. The Speed 400’s rivals include the KTM 390 Duke, Honda CB300R, BMW G 310 R and the Zontes GK350, undercutting ALL of them by a massive margin!
Both bikes pack the new 398cc liquid-cooled engine making 40PS and 37.5Nm. 30Nm of that is made from as low as 3000rpm. Triumph claims that the mileage for them is 28.3kmpl. Underpinnings too, remain the same as the international bike - an inverted fork, monoshock and disc brakes. Read more about what it packs here. What’s changed on the India-spec bikes though, are the tyres. The international-spec Speed 400 gets very premium Metzeler Sportec M9RR tyres but the India-spec bike could come either with Apollo Alpha H1s or MRF Steel Brace tyres. Triumph will be deciding on one of them soon. The Scrambler 400 X, on the other hand, gets MRF Zapper Kurve block-pattern tyres. Its international model gets Metzeler Karoo Street rubber.
Another major difference is in the bikes’ weights. Here's how much the India-spec bikes weigh:
Bike |
International-spec Kerb Weight |
India-spec Kerb Weight |
Speed 400 |
170kg |
176kg |
Scrambler 400 X |
179kg |
185kg |
Both the India-spec bikes are fairly heavier than the international ones considering the Indian bikes need to have a saree guard, front numberplate and a grab handle as standard.
Along with these aspects, they get a 16,000km service interval and a two-year unlimited mileage warranty. Now while it sound premium and very promising, them missing out on Bluetooth connectivity is a small miss in our opinion (not a dealbreaker, though). Bits like turn-by-turn navigation can be extremely useful everyday commuting as well as on touring, and these two can definitely potter around town and munch miles with ease.
The Speed 400 will be available in Triumph dealerships by the second half of July. The Scrambler 400 X, on the other hand, will be available by October 2023. The British brand aims to expand to upto 100 dealers in 80 cities by the end of this financial year (by the end of March 2024). Prospective buyers must note that both the bikes will be sold through Triumph dealerships only.
All in all, Triumph has absolutely surpassed all expectations with regards to the Speed 400's pricing. Rs 2.23 lakh for the Speed 400 means you get a hell lot of bike for that money and it manages to massively undercut all of its rivals. Heck, it's even more affordable than the brilliantly-priced (Vivid variant of) Harley-Davidson X440, while packing a lot more power and premium quotient. It sounds exciting and promises to bring the performance and quality levels we usually associate with Triumph at a relatively affordable price. We’re riding the Speed 400 soon and our first ride review will drop on July 14.
