There’s no denying the popularity of minibikes in the past and the fact that they are slowly regaining their lost sheen. Honda plans to revive the ST125 and has trademarked the name ‘Honda ST125’ in Europe. Over the years, Honda used the name Dax in Japan and Trailsport in America for the ST50, ST70 and ST90 models.
These minibikes shared their motor with the Honda Cub scooters. Apart from the engine, the bodywork was quite different. The ST/Dax had a pressed-steel frame with a T-bone structuring connecting the head-stock single-piece seat. The engine was placed right below the rider. Furthermore, it had monkey-styled suspension with fat tyres.
Honda has also filed a trademark for the name ‘Trailsport’ in the US where minibikes are largely popular. The ST125 suggests the engine could be a 125cc single-cylinder as found in the Honda MSX Grom models.
Minibikes never really gained popularity in India. The last minibike of sorts that we got here was the Honda Navi scooter which has been discontinued. If history is any indication, Honda is unlikely to bring the ST125 to India, although we must say quirky minibikes exude a different kind of charm!
