A continuous moniker may help Honda’s old favourite solidify its recall value
Honda has dropped the ‘G’ suffix from its Activa scooter, with the bikemaker’s website showing just ‘Activa’ for the 110cc offering, and Activa 125 for its larger sibling. No other changes have been announced for both the scooters, with the ex-showroom (Delhi) prices – between Rs 75,347 and Rs 81,348 for the Activa and between 78,920 and Rs 88,093 for the Activa 125 – staying unchanged as well.
The ‘G’ suffix on Honda’s scooters started with the Activa 3G in 2015, which was a notable update as it was when the Activa’s engine went up to 109cc, which is its current size. The next big update for the Activa came in early 2020 – in the form of the 6G – when it gained fuel injection to comply with the BS6 norms.
Besides these, though, the Activa has mostly undergone visual updates, with the 5G getting a digital inset in its speedometer (that was curiously removed with the 6G update). Nevertheless, the same engine, with regular emissions updates, hardly warrants a ‘G’ suffix (as the word itself usually denotes a generational update). And we guess Honda, too, has realised this.
So as it stands, subsequent versions of the Honda Activa will be named as per their model year, a move which we believe will be easier to classify. Besides, it also preserves the ‘Activa’ model name, which already has a massive brand recall for the past two decades.
And finally, Honda’s upcoming electric scooter will also likely be called the ‘Activa Electric’, a move which will, we believe, further cement the name among the people.
