India’s leading automobile manufacture Mahindra & Mahindra has stepped into motorcycle manufacturing after buying majority stacks in Kinetic Engineering and renamed it as Mahindra Two-wheelers. The company has launched a total of five vehicles including four scooters and one bike. Mahindra scooters have been doing well, but their maiden bike Mahindra Stallio 110, which was a mass segment commuter bike failed to impress Indian buyers. The Company stopped its production some time back, because of poor performance and other technical issues. The bike came in the News recently because the bike spotted during test runs at several places in the country. First, there were rumours that it is some new bike from Mahindra, but now there are reports coming in that it is a revamped version of the Mahindra Stallio rechristened as the Panthero 110.
The bike is expected to arrive by January, 2013 and this time Mahindra is hoping high with this new avatar of the Stallio. The new name of the bike retains Mahindra’s unique nomenclature in which company christened its product with names ending with letter ‘O’. All the Mahindra cars follow this nomenclature including two of Mahindra scooter the Duro and the Rodeo, only the Flyte and Kine are exceptions. Mahindra Stallio had has many technical issues, most of these were associated with its gear box, so we are expecting that this new model of the bike won’t have the similar problems. The spied pictures of the bike suggest that the bike has been kept unchanged as far as the looks are concerned. The bike is very similar to the Stallio and there are reports that it will feature the same engine. It is largely the same product with the new badge ‘Panthero’. The engine will continue to be the 110cc, four stroke motor producing 7.3bhp of peak power and 8Nm of peak torque.
The engine is expected to be mated with a tuned 4-speed manual gearbox. The bike will feature the same specification of the Stallio. It will be very difficult for Mahindra to make its way in the jam-packed commuter segment and the Panthero has to face the heat of the competition from the likes of Hero Passion XPro 110, Honda Dream Yuga and Twister. The bike is expected to launch in January, 2013 and there could be another bike from the Manufacturer. Mahindra Mojo 300 is also expected to launch in 2013, it was showcased at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. It is a sportsbike, which features a 292cc, single cylinder engine with a DOHC-four valve layout and liquid cooling and expected to compete with the Honda CBR250R and Kawasaki Ninja 250R.
