Triumph Could Replace Honda As Official Engine Supplier For Moto2

Dorna is reportedly signing Triumph Motorcycles as a replacement for Honda as the official engine supplier in Moto2 from season 2019

The regulating body of Moto2, Dorna, was in search for a new engine supplier for quite some time as its contract with Honda is ending in 2018. According to the latest report from the world of racing, the British bikemaker Triumph is going to replace the Japanese automaker as the official engine supplier for the Moto2 class. Till now, no one has made any formal announcement regarding that but the former is said to be taking the charge from the season 2019 with an updated version of its inline-triple that will be fitted in the upcoming 2017 Street Triple and the Daytona.

Moto2 is a single supplier class in which all the participating teams have to build their motorcycles around the same engine. However, they are permitted to use different settings and tuning within the approved limits. Honda has been supplying its 600cc, inline-four motors for these race machines for a long time and this is the same unit that serves on its CBR600RR. In its latest standard version, the liquid-cooled, DOHC mill produces 114.5PS of power at 13,500rpm and delivers a peak torque of 66Nm at 11,250rpm. But as we mentioned above, different teams tweak the motor to get desired outputs.

Besides the conclusion of the contract in 2018, Honda's exit from the game was already assured as the company is soon going to withdraw this motor from the market. The CBR600RR is not compatible with the Euro 4 emission norms and some reports claim that the company is not going to invest in updating the existing engine as it has become quite old now.

On the other hand, Triumph is soon going to unveil its updated middleweight inline triple soon, with its 2017 Street Triple roadster and the Daytona supersport bike. Three of the manufacturers speculated to become the official supplier for the Moto2 class were KTM, Kawasaki, and MV Agusta, but the British manufacturer surprisingly clinched the contract. However, official words from Triumph Motorcycles or Dorna are still awaited.

The existing middleweight triple of the company displaces around 675cc and delivers 128PS and 74Nm in the Daytona 675R model. However, the updated version of the engine is expected to have an increased capacity of 750cc, thus delivering enhanced performance as well. The company is going to reveal the motor today with the unveiling of its new Street Triple, while the superior performance-tuned 2017 Daytona will be introduced sometime later.
