As much as the recently concluded 2016 Auto Expo served to sate the curiosities of all bike fans, it also brought with it new attractions to look forward to. The TVS Akula 310, a fully-faired concept developed on the BMW G310 R platform, had been one of the crowd favourites during its world debut there. And, so began our long wait for its launch, slated for early 2017. However, it seems the Chennai-based company doesn’t wish to make us wait too long and the Akula 310 might hit the streets within 2016.
The stylish Akula - Russian for Shark - could be ready to wreak havoc in the waters of the Indian performance motorcycle market by the festive season, later this year, according to the revised plans of the company. The reason for this change in its timeline could be the special relevance 2016 holds in the history of the company’s racing arm.
The concept bike unveiled at the biennial event had borne the number 33 on its front visor in celebration of TVS Motor Company’s 33 years of racing history. The Akula 310 is a racing concept machine, developed by the company’s factory racing team, TVS Racing.
With TVS having preponed the launch schedule of its shark (Akula), it becomes a daunting task for company’s R&D team. The team will have to work even harder to keep up with the deadline, with testing of various aspects and road worthiness yet to be carried out. The concept might undergo significant changes before it goes into production. We hope that the aggressive aesthetic is not watered down due to this.
Powering the bike is a 313cc, single-cylinder, liquid cooled engine that comes mated to 6-speed transmission. The motor churns out a maximum power of 33.6bhp @ 9000 rpm along with 28Nm of torque at 7500 rpm. With this setup, it can attain a top speed of 145 kmph and delivers a mileage of about 30 kmpl.
The TVS Akula 310 will feature a fully digital instrument console that provides ample information including a speedometer, tachometer, gear indicator, mileage, average speed and distance to empty. In the suspension department, it comes equipped with inverted front forks and mono shock absorber at the rear. Braking duties will be taken care of by dual disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).
This fully faired version of G310 R is developed under a joint venture of BMW-TVS and will be manufactured in the TVS facility located in Hasur, Maharashtra. It remains to be seen how much of the original concept’s attractive design elements including the aggressive styling, the minuscule tail section and others are retained in the production version. This would certainly not be the first time that a beautiful concept is lost to the challenges of mass production.
We are keeping our fingers crossed and hope that TVS gives us the festive bonanza we look forward to from the Akula 310. Are you?
When launched in India, it will take on the likes of Kawasaki Ninja 300, Yamaha R3 and KTM RC 390.
