Ducati introduces variable timing in motorcycle engines

Ducati will now equip its motorcycle engines with the first in industry variable timing for both intake and exhaust camshafts. The Ducati Testastretta DVT, Desmodromic Variable Timing, will be featured on Ducati’s new Desmodromic engine. The DVT system constantly adjusts valve timing by independently on intake and exhaust camshafts resulting in optimised performance across the entire rev band. This ensures the highest power delivery and meatier torque output along with reduced fuel consumption. The new Testastretta engine produces 160bhp of maximum power at 9,500rpm and peak torque of 136Nm at 7,500rpm.

The term Desmodromic is derived from the Greek words ‘desmos’ meaning ‘link’ and ‘dromos’ meaning ‘stroke, travel’. Mechanical engineering terms would define as the mechanisms designed to actuate valves both in the opening direction and in the closing direction. The DVT system quickly adapts the engine characteristics according to rpm values, delivering maximum power at high rpm and smooth, fluid power delivery through mid and low rpm levels. A torque of 80Nm is already present at a low 3,500rpm and stays consistent above 100Nm between 5,750 and 9,500 rpm. The engine is also equipped with Dual Spark (DS) system and an anti-knock sensor for optimised efficiency and safe engine operation with the use of lower octane fuel or when riding at high altitude.
