Here’s how the 400cc bikes fare against each other, in detailed pictures

Triumph has launched the Speed 400 in India, and with it, the British bikemaker has also surprised everyone with its extremely affordable pricing, which is similar to the Bajaj Dominar 400. And with that, here’s how both the bikes compare in detailed images.

Both bikes belong to two very different genres. The Triumph Speed 400 is a roadster with retro styling elements that look quite classy. It is pretty muscular, and resembles the Triumph Speed Twin 1200, featuring a circular LED headlight.

The Bajaj Dominar 400, on the other hand, is a big and bulky sports tourer, though with a sharp design language.

Powering the Speed 400 is a brand new 398cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine making 40PS and 37.5Nm. It is paired with a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch. It comes equipped with ride-by-wire, switchable traction control, and dual channel ABS.

Bajaj sources the Dominar 400’s engine from KTM, and it’s the same 373cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled unit as the 390 Duke. However, it comes with lower power and torque figures of 40PS and 35Nm. It, too, gets a six-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch.

The hardware on the Speed 400 is pretty premium – 43mm big piston USD fork and a preload-adjustable gas-charged monoshock. Braking is done via a 300mm disc up front and 230mm disc at the rear with ByBre calipers, with dual-channel ABS as standard.

The Dominar 400, too, features a USD fork and a preload-adjustable gas-charged monoshock.  While the front disc rotor is a bigger 320mm unit, the rear one is a 230mm unit, the same as the Speed 400. Dual-channel ABS is standard on Dominar as well.

In terms of kerb weight, the Speed 400 is pretty accessible, tipping the scales at 176kg, whereas the Dominar 400 is much heavier, weighing in at 193kg.

While the Speed 400 gets a semi-digital console, the Dominar 400 gets two fully digital consoles. However, the consoles on both bikes display the same information – speedometer, tachometer, gear position indicator, and more. Both miss out on smartphone connectivity and navigation.

Both bikes come with a similar ex-showroom sticker price: the Triumph Speed 400 at Rs 2,33,000, the Bajaj Dominar 400 at Rs 2,29,000. However, the first ten thousand bookings for the Speed 400 can be done at a special price of Rs 2,23,000, making it an extremely value-for-money bike, considering that you get the bragging rights of owning a Triumph.
