- With the Bajaj Freedom 125 launch more Indian two-wheeler manufacturers are working on CNG two-wheelers
- TVS has been working on a CNG powertrain for a while now
- It is likely to be integrated into the TVS Jupiter 125
TVS is working on a CNG Scooter based on the Jupiter 125, according to an online report. The brand had been working on a CNG powertrain along with other alternative fuel technologies and now with the Bajaj Freedom 125’s launch, it is only natural that TVS also wants to get into the CNG two-wheeler segment.
The report says that work on the CNG scooter, project codename U720 has already begun and the scooter's production is likely to begin by September or October 2024. The CNG scooter could likely be launched by the end of 2024 or first half of 2025.
The Jupiter CNG Scooter is likely to be powered by a 125cc engine and could feature a similar hybrid petrol-CNG powertrain as the recently launched Bajaj Freedom 125. It could likely offer similar performance as that of a 110cc petrol-powered scooter.
CNG bikes and scooters will likely be a good middle-ground between petrol powered and EV two-wheelers, and also promises to offer lowered energy costs when compared to an equivalent petrol powered two-wheeler. The Freedom 125 with its 2kg CNG tank and 2-litre petrol tanks offers a claimed range of around 330km. We have done a detailed analysis of the mileage claims here.
Once launched, the TVS CNG scooter will be the world’s first CNG scooter and also India’s second CNG two-wheeler. It won’t have any natural rivals but will go up against other 110cc scooters in the market such as the Hero Xoom 110, Honda Activa 6G and the Honda Dio.
