The much-awaited 2016 EICMA Motorcycle Show has begun in Milan and Italian bike manufacturer, Ducati, has a strong line-up for the event. Ducati has surprised everyone by introducing the facelift of the Monster 1200 as opposed to the rumours of a new entry-level Monster offering. Under the facelift, the new Monster 1200 gets updated cycle parts, few cosmetic changes and a hike in power output. Ducati will offer the new Monster 1200 in two variants – Standard and the S version.
The flagship model is powered by the updated version of the 1,198cc twin-cylinder 11° Testastretta engine that is now Euro-4 compliant. The motor now develops 152PS of power 125Nm of peak torque, which is almost 15PS more than its predecessor and 5PS more than the S variant. The company claims that with the new throttle bodies and new twin exhaust system, power delivery is now smoother.
Under cosmetic changes, the bike features a slimmer fuel tank accompanied by a revised tail section. It receives an all-new headlight design and new foot pegs for better foot support. Seat height is now adjustable from 795 to 820mm. The Monster 1200 S sports Y-spoke alloy wheels and a carbon fibre front fender while the standard variant features 10-spoke alloys.
On the electronics front, information to the traction and wheelie control system will now be provided by the Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU) derived from the 1299 Panigale. Cornering ABS will assist for a wider range of road conditions. It gets the Ride-by-Wire system for sharper throttle response, while the instrument console now features a TFT colour display. Along with the new electronic equipment, the S variant additionally gets the Ducati Quick Shift (up/down) system.
Ducati has shortened the wheelbase of the new Monster 1200 from 1511mm to 1485mm for improved handling characteristics. For suspension duties, the standard variant comes with Kayaba/ Sachs units while the S variant receives the adjustable Ohlins setup. The bike now stands on sticky Pirelli Diablo III tyres.
